Sometimes, the tartar buildup below the gumline is too severe for treatment during a normal hygiene appointment. Scaling and root planing appointments are focused on restoring your gums to health by removing tartar and preparing the roots of your teeth to speed gum healing. In the earlier stages of gum disease, the damage to your teeth and gums is reversible. Scaling and root planing helps your gums heal and preserves the integrity of your smile.
Patients with moderate to severe gum disease may need surgery to remove the infection and surrounding diseased tissue.
